All about sending the newsletters at the right time

Imagine this. Your client wakes up one Monday morning, comes to work, checks inbox, finds too many mails and starts deleting every mail that doesn’t seem important. Chances are your follow up email or weekly newsletter has gone to the trash folder. Your well planned content, strategic design and effective CTA are all in the trash now. One opportunity lost.

What do you infer? Isn’t the real purpose of sending a newsletter failed here? This is just one of the several instances when an email is deleted even before it is opened (there are instances when emails are just ignored).

Here are a few pointers to sending your newsletter at the right time.

  • Knowing your target customers gets you a lot of information, for instance, who the newsletter is being sent, time you choose to send, and the kind of content that should go into it. In other words, you’ll design it in the way your customers want.
  • Melancholic Mondays are a wrong time to send out your newsletter emails. The general consensus is that people are already in a depressing mode with weekend coming to an end and the beginning of a mostly hectic week with challenges pouring in. The first thing they would do is delete the unknown, unwanted and uninteresting mails.
  • Sleeping hours are for sleeping only and for nothing else. It is always good to shoot emails when people are awake and not asleep. There is a high probability that people like your aforementioned client would simply end up ignoring such emails.
  • Fridays and Sundays are equally bad time to send out your newsletters or marketing campaign emails. Everyone wants a break work and if it was a tumultuous week for your recepient, God save your email. Poor guys would be waiting for a weekends when they would go on an adventure or do something that keep them in good spirit. Weekends are for charging oneself up. So, it is obvious that none would have time or interest to look at the newsletters.
  • Between 9 and 10 AM is not advisable as it is the time when people’s workday starts. The first thing one would usually do if s/he is into a target-oriented job is check emails to prioritize tasks for the day. This implies you will be fighting lot more to grab their attention.

Best days, best time for newsletter emails

  1. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are considered suitable days to send out emails.
  • 11 to 1, i.e., post-morning tea break is seen as good as they have the time and patience to read through emails. Their minds are relaxed as the day’s work is clear.
  • 2 to 4, i.e., post-lunch, they will feel recharged and so, this can be considered almost perfect time for an interesting newsletter to pop up in their mailbox.
  • 7 to 8, i.e., is equally good time because this is the time people retire from work and they have time to read through their emails.
  1. Saturdays can also be perfect days to shoot your emails as people have time to read through them. It’s seen as the relaxed time and so, it becomes easy to catch them when they have time to spare.
